How to Recover Deleted Photos on iPhone (Within 30 Days and After)
Most deleted iPhone photos can be brought back in under a minute, because the iPhone does not delete them straight away. For 30 days they wait in an album called Recently Deleted, and one tap restores them. After that window, the chances depend on things you set up before the photo was deleted: iCloud Photos, a backup, a copy sent to someone. This guide goes through every place a deleted photo can still exist, in the order worth checking, and is honest about the point where a photo is gone for good.
The short version
- Check Recently Deleted first. Photos, Utilities, Recently Deleted. Anything deleted in the last 30 days is there. Select it and tap Recover.
- Check it was deleted at all. The Hidden album, a filtered Library view, or a Shared Library can make a photo look missing.
- After 30 days: iCloud.com, a computer backup, or an older iCloud backup may still hold it. Restoring a whole-phone backup replaces what is on the phone now, so save current photos first.
- Look where copies live: Messages and WhatsApp chats, email, a Mac, another cloud service.
- "Undelete" apps cannot beat encryption. Once Recently Deleted is emptied and no copy exists, the photo cannot be recovered from the iPhone.
Step 1: Recently Deleted
- Open Photos and scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Recently Deleted and unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Tap Select, tap the photos you want back, then tap Recover. To bring back everything, tap Recover without selecting and choose Recover All.
Recovered photos return to the Library and to the albums they were in. Each item shows how many days it has left before it is removed permanently. If you use iCloud Photos, the same Recently Deleted album is on your iPad, your Mac, and iCloud.com, so a photo deleted on one device can be recovered from any of them within the 30 days.

Step 2: make sure it is really gone
A surprising number of "deleted" photos were never deleted.
- Hidden. A hidden photo disappears from the Library, albums, and search. Open Utilities, Hidden. If Hidden is not listed, turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings, Apps, Photos. How hiding works is covered in how to hide photos on iPhone.
- A filtered Library. The Library view can be set to show only some items. Tap the sort and filter button in the Library and make sure it is set to show everything, including screenshots.
- Shared Library. If you use an iCloud Shared Library, switch the Library view between Personal and Shared. A photo can live in one and not the other.
- Search. Search for the place, the person, or a word in the photo. Search finds photos you scrolled past.
- A Recovered album. On recent versions of iOS, an album called Recovered can appear under Utilities when Photos finds images in its database that were not showing. If you see it, look inside before anything else.
Step 3: iCloud.com
If iCloud Photos is on, sign in at iCloud.com on a computer, open Photos, and check Recently Deleted there. It is the same 30-day window, not a second one, but it helps when the phone is lost, broken, or will not open the album. If iCloud Photos was off when the photo was taken, the photo was never in iCloud Photos, and the next place to look is a backup.
Step 4: a backup from before the deletion
A backup is a snapshot of the whole phone. Restoring one puts the phone back to that moment, which brings the photo back and removes everything added since. So first save what is on the phone now: export recent photos to a computer, or make a fresh backup to a different location.
iCloud Backup
An iCloud Backup includes your photos only if iCloud Photos was off. With iCloud Photos on, photos are stored in iCloud Photos and left out of the backup. To check what you have, open Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup and look at the date of the last backup. Restoring means erasing the iPhone (Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Erase All Content and Settings) and choosing Restore from iCloud Backup during setup, then picking a backup dated before the deletion.
Computer backup
If you back up to a Mac with Finder or to a PC with the Apple Devices app, connect the iPhone, choose Restore Backup, and pick one from before the deletion. The same rule applies: whatever changed after that backup is replaced.
Step 5: the copies you forgot about
- Messages. Open the conversation where you sent or received it, tap the contact's name at the top, and scroll to Photos. Touch and hold, then Save.
- WhatsApp and other chats keep their own copy of shared media, unless it was deleted there too.
- Email and Notes attachments.
- A Mac with a Photos library that is not synced through iCloud, or a folder you imported to years ago.
- Other cloud services with automatic photo backup, and a Shared Album you posted to.
- The person who took it. A group photo usually exists on three other phones.
When a photo is gone for good
If Recently Deleted has been emptied or the 30 days have passed, iCloud Photos was on (so it was deleted there too), and there is no backup or copy elsewhere, the photo cannot be recovered. iPhone storage is encrypted, and deleted data cannot be read back from it. Apps and desktop programs that promise to "recover deleted iPhone photos" can only read the same backups and cloud copies described above. Be wary of any that ask for your Apple Account password or a payment before showing what they found.
How to make the next deletion safe
- Leave Recently Deleted alone unless you need the space today. It is the free undo button.
- Keep one copy outside the phone. iCloud Photos, a regular computer backup, or an occasional export. Any one of them turns a mistake into a two-minute fix.
- Review before removing. When clearing duplicates or bursts, check which shot is kept. Can I recover photos deleted more than 30 days ago?
