How to Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone (Photos App vs Cleana)

How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone with the Photos app and Cleana

Duplicate photos are the cheapest storage you will ever recover: the copies add nothing, and deleting them changes nothing about your library except its size. The question is how to find them without scrolling through ten thousand pictures. iPhone has a built-in Duplicates album that handles exact copies, and a dedicated cleaner handles the much larger pile of near-duplicates the built-in tool never shows. This guide covers both, in that order, with what to expect from each.

The short version

Why you have so many duplicates

A typical library of 10,000 photos carries several hundred exact duplicates and a few thousand near-duplicates. Together they are usually 5 to 15 GB. If you are not sure photos are your storage problem, check what is taking up storage on your iPhone first.

Method 1: The built-in Duplicates album in Photos

Since iOS 16, Photos scans your library in the background and collects exact and near-exact copies into one album.

  1. Open Photos and go to Albums. On iOS 18 and later, scroll down to Utilities.
  2. Tap Duplicates. If the album is missing, your library has not finished indexing yet; leave the phone locked and charging overnight and check again.
  3. Each row shows a set of matching photos with their sizes and resolutions.
  4. Tap Merge on a row to keep the highest quality version and move the rest to Recently Deleted. Tap Select, then Select All, then Merge to do the whole album at once.

Merging is safe: Photos keeps the best copy and combines the metadata, so captions, favorites, and albums are preserved. Do this first, it costs nothing.

Where it stops: the album only matches photos that are the same image, or the same image at different sizes. Two burst shots taken half a second apart, a photo and its edited version, the same view with a slightly different framing, none of those count as duplicates to Photos. For most libraries that is where the real gigabytes are, and the built-in tool leaves them untouched. It also decides nothing about quality; it keeps the largest file, not the sharpest photo.

Method 2: Clear near-duplicates with Cleana

Cleana looks at the pictures, not just the files. It groups photos that show the same moment, marks the one worth keeping, and lets you clear the rest in a few taps. Everything runs on the phone; nothing is uploaded.

  1. Download Cleana and open the duplicates section. The first scan takes a moment, then the results are cached.
  2. Groups appear sorted by how much space they waste, biggest first. Each group shows every version side by side.
  3. In each group the sharpest, best-exposed, best-framed shot is pre-selected as the keeper. Faces and expressions count too, so the photo where everyone has their eyes open wins.
  4. Change the keeper with a tap if you disagree, or skip a group entirely.
  5. Confirm. The unselected copies move to Recently Deleted, and the summary shows how much space you recovered.

Because Cleana catches burst shots and repeated takes as well as exact copies, the results are usually several times larger than the Duplicates album. The duplicate photo cleaner page explains the matching in more detail, and our similar photos guide covers the looser "same scene, different shot" groups.

Method 3: By hand, for small libraries

Under a thousand photos, you can scroll the Recents view, select duplicates as you spot them, and delete in batches. It works. Above that, you will miss most of them, because duplicates rarely sit next to each other once messages and imports are involved.

Finish the job: Recently Deleted and iCloud

Deleted photos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days and keep counting against your storage until then. To get the space now, open Photos, Albums, Utilities, Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All. Face ID confirms it.

If you use iCloud Photos, deleting on the iPhone deletes everywhere, and the space you free is iCloud space too. If you use "Optimize iPhone Storage", the phone already keeps small versions of most photos, so the on-device saving is smaller than the iCloud saving. Both are real.

How much space to expect

These figures combine exact and near-duplicates. The Duplicates album alone usually recovers a fifth to a third of that.

Quick answers

How do I delete duplicate photos on iPhone for free?

Cleana is free to download and groups exact and near-duplicate photos with the best one pre-selected, entirely on your device. Photos also has a built-in Duplicates album under Albums, Utilities, which merges exact copies.

Why is there no Duplicates album on my iPhone?

The album needs iOS 16 or later and only appears after Photos has finished indexing your library, which happens while the phone is locked and charging. It also disappears when there are no duplicates left.

Does the Photos Duplicates album find similar photos?

No. It matches the same image at the same or different sizes. Burst shots, edited versions, and near-identical takes are not included; a cleaner like Cleana is needed for those.

Does deleting duplicates free up space immediately?

Not until Recently Deleted is emptied. Deleted photos stay there for 30 days and count against storage. Empty it manually to get the space back right away.

Is it safe to merge duplicates in Photos?

Yes. Merge keeps the highest quality copy and combines captions, favorites, and album membership from the others before moving them to Recently Deleted, so the action is reversible for 30 days.
