How to Hide Photos on iPhone: Hidden Album vs a Photo Vault
Handing your phone to someone to show them one photo should not mean showing them all of them. iPhone has a built-in Hidden album for exactly this, and since iOS 16 it locks with Face ID, which makes it far better than it used to be. It still has gaps, and for photos that genuinely must stay private a locked vault closes them. The short version
- Casual privacy, no app: select the photo, Share, Hide. Then Settings, Apps, Photos, turn off Show Hidden Album so the album disappears from view. Face ID protects it on iOS 16 and later.

Method 1: The Hidden album in Photos
- Open Photos and select one or more photos or videos.
- Tap the three dots (or the Share icon on older versions) and choose Hide. Confirm.
- The items move out of your library into Albums, Utilities, Hidden.
- Make the album itself invisible: Settings, Apps, Photos, turn off Show Hidden Album. The Hidden and Recently Deleted albums disappear from the Albums view until you turn the switch back on.
- Check that Use Face ID is on in the same settings screen. On iOS 16 and later it is on by default, and the album asks for Face ID or your passcode every time it opens.
This is genuinely useful and it costs nothing. Hidden photos leave your main library, Memories, and the widget, and the Face ID lock stops a casual scroll from finding them.
Where it stops. First, everyone knows the Hidden album exists and where it lives, so it announces that there is something to find. Second, the lock is your phone's Face ID and passcode, so anyone who knows your passcode, a partner, a child who watched you type it, can open it. Third, hidden photos still sync through iCloud Photos to every device on your account, including the family iPad and the Mac. Fourth, the photos are still in your Photos library: an app you gave full photo access to can still see them, and a backup or a photo picker set to "all photos" includes them.
Method 2: A locked photo vault
A vault solves the gaps by taking the photos out of the Photos library entirely and locking them with a code that is not your phone passcode.
- Download Cleana and open Secret Space from the tab bar.

- Add photos and videos from your library. They are encrypted and stored inside the app on your iPhone.

Method 3: A locked note, for a few photos
For one or two images, the Notes app works: create a note, add the photos, tap the three dots, choose Lock. Notes can lock with your passcode or a separate note password. It is fiddly for more than a handful, and the photos stay in your library unless you delete them there too, but for a passport scan or a single document it is a fine stopgap.

The mistakes that expose hidden photos
- Recently Deleted. Deleting the original after vaulting it leaves a copy in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Empty it: Photos, Albums, Utilities, Recently Deleted, Select, Delete All.
- Shared albums and Shared Library. A photo already in an iCloud Shared Album or a Family Shared Library stays visible to the others when you hide it on your phone. Remove it from the share first.
- Messages and WhatsApp. The chat where you sent the photo still has it. Hiding your copy does not touch theirs.
- Backups. Hidden photos are in every iCloud and computer backup. Vaulted photos are not in the Photos library, but the vault itself lives on the device, so see the next point.
- A vault is only as safe as the phone. Anything stored only in a vault on your device is gone if the app is deleted or the phone is lost. For irreplaceable images, keep an encrypted copy somewhere you control.
When each one is enough

- Documents, medical photos, anything you would not want a partner, roommate, or child to stumble on: vault.
