How to Delete Duplicate Contacts on iPhone (Merge Without Losing Numbers)
Three entries for the same friend, each with a different subset of their numbers. A "Mom" and a "Mum" and a "Mom iPhone". Forty contacts that are just a phone number. Duplicate contacts are not a storage problem, they are a "which one do I call" problem, and they make every share sheet and every Siri request a little worse. Why the same person appears three times
Almost always, accounts. Your iPhone shows contacts from every account that has Contacts turned on: iCloud, Gmail, Exchange or Outlook, sometimes Yahoo, sometimes an old SIM import. Each account holds its own copy of the person, and the copies drift: one has the mobile number, another the work email, the third a nickname from 2016. The result is not three identical cards you can delete blindly. It is three partial cards, and deleting the wrong two loses information. That is why merging, not deleting, is the right operation.
Method 1: The Duplicates Found card in Contacts
iOS 16 introduced built-in duplicate detection for contacts.
- Open the Contacts app, or the Contacts tab in Phone.
- At the top of the list, look for a Duplicates Found card. Tap View Duplicates.
- Each row shows the cards iOS thinks are the same person. Tap a row to see them side by side, then Merge.
- Or tap Merge All at the top to do the whole list at once. Merged information is combined into one card.
Where it stops. The card only appears when iOS is confident two cards are the same person, generally a matching name plus a matching number or email. Variants like "Mom" and "Mum", or a contact with only a number in one account and only an email in another, are usually not flagged. It does nothing about the forty number-only entries, and there is no undo beyond an iCloud restore. If the card does not appear at all, iOS has not found duplicates it is sure about, which does not mean your list is clean.
Method 2: Merge and tidy with Cleana

Method 3: Merge two contacts by hand
For a single pair you notice while browsing: open one card, tap Edit, scroll to the bottom, tap Link Contacts, and pick the other card. iOS shows them as one unified card while keeping both underlying records. Linking is not merging, the copies still exist in their accounts, but it fixes the display for one person in ten seconds.
Stop the duplicates coming back
- One default account. Settings, Apps, Contacts, Default Account. Pick iCloud (or whichever you actually use) so new contacts land in one place.
- Turn off Contacts on accounts that only add noise. Settings, Apps, Contacts, Accounts, then toggle Contacts off for the old Gmail or Exchange account you no longer need. The contacts stay in that account, they just stop appearing on the phone.
- Do not import from SIM twice. Once is a migration, twice is a duplicate set.
- Check after a phone switch. The first week on a new iPhone is when most duplicates appear. Run a scan then.
Before you delete anything
Contacts are small but irreplaceable.
