How to Delete Multiple Contacts on iPhone (or All of Them)
Deleting one contact on iPhone is easy. Deleting forty is where people give up: tap, Edit, scroll, Delete Contact, confirm, and again, and again. For years there was no other way on the phone. Now there is. The Contacts app can select a whole run of contacts with a two-finger drag and delete them together, and iCloud.com can clear an entire address book in one go. This guide covers both, how to delete everything from one account without touching the rest, why some contacts refuse to go, and the step to take before any bulk delete, because contacts are small but irreplaceable.
The short version
- Back up first. Export a vCard from iCloud.com, or save a backup in a contact app, before deleting in bulk.
- Several at once: in Contacts, touch the first contact with two fingers and drag down the list. Then touch and hold the selection and tap Delete.
- All of them: on iCloud.com, open Contacts, select all, and delete. The change syncs to every device.
- One account only (an old Gmail or work account): turn off Contacts for that account in Settings, Apps, Contacts, Contacts Accounts.

Before you delete anything: make a backup
A bulk delete in Contacts syncs everywhere your account is signed in, and there is no undo button. Two minutes of backup turns a risky job into a safe one.
- iCloud.com: sign in, open Contacts, select all, and choose Export vCard. You get one file with every contact that can be imported again later.

Method 1: Select several contacts with two fingers
Recent versions of iOS let you select a run of contacts in one gesture.
- Open Contacts, or the Contacts tab in Phone.
- Touch the first contact you want to delete with two fingers, and drag them down the list. Every contact you pass is selected and highlighted.
- Lift your fingers. To add contacts further down, scroll, then drag with two fingers again over the next group.
- Touch and hold any selected contact with one finger, and tap Delete Contacts in the menu. Confirm.
The gesture selects contacts that sit next to each other in the list, which makes it ideal for clearing a block of old entries, such as everything under one company or a run of unnamed numbers. For scattered contacts, repeat the drag for each group before deleting.
Method 2: Delete all contacts with iCloud.com
To start over with an empty address book, the web is faster than the phone.
- On a computer, sign in at iCloud.com and open Contacts.
- Select all contacts. On a Mac, click one and press Command-A; on Windows, Control-A.
- Delete them, and confirm.
With iCloud Contacts turned on, the iPhone follows within minutes. This deletes the contacts from iCloud on every device, so export the vCard first.
Method 3: Remove every contact from one account
Often the goal is not "delete all" but "get rid of the old work contacts" or "stop the Gmail copies". That does not need a bulk delete at all.
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Contacts.
- Tap Contacts Accounts and choose the account.
- Turn off Contacts.
Every contact from that account disappears from the phone, while the account itself keeps them, which you can undo any time by turning the switch back on. A bulk delete is usually aimed at three kinds of clutter, and each has a better tool than the delete button.

If contacts come back after you delete them
- Another account still has them. A contact deleted from iCloud can still arrive from Gmail or Exchange. Check Lists in Contacts to see which accounts are on.
- Another device re-synced them. An old iPad or Mac with a different account can push them back. Delete at the source.
- They were suggestions, not contacts. Names found in Mail and Messages appear as suggestions; turning off contact suggestions removes them.
