How to Recover Deleted Contacts on iPhone (iCloud, Gmail, or No Backup)
You cleaned up the address book, or a sync went wrong, or one swipe landed on the wrong name, and now a number you need is gone. Photos and Notes have a Recently Deleted folder for moments like this. Contacts has not had one, which is why a deleted contact feels so final. It usually is not. Almost every contact on an iPhone lives in an account, iCloud, Gmail, or Outlook, and each of those accounts keeps a way back for a while. This guide shows how to work out where the contact lived, how to restore it from each kind of account, what to try when there is no backup at all, and the two-minute habit that means you never have to do this again.
The short version
- Check it is really deleted. In Contacts, tap Lists and open All Contacts. A hidden list or a switched-off account looks exactly like a deleted contact.
- iCloud contacts: on a computer or iPad, sign in to iCloud.com, open Data Recovery, choose Restore Contacts, and pick a date before the deletion.
- Gmail contacts: Google Contacts keeps deleted entries in its Trash for 30 days. Outlook has a Deleted folder under People.
- No backup anywhere? The number is often still in Recents, a Messages thread, WhatsApp, or an old email.
- Next time: save a backup before any cleanup. Cleana's Contacts tab has Backups for exactly that, on the device.
First, make sure the contact is actually gone
A surprising share of "deleted" contacts were never deleted. Check these before restoring anything, because a restore replaces the whole address book.
- A list filter. Open Contacts and tap Lists at the top left. If only one list is selected, contacts from other accounts are hidden. Tap All Contacts.
- An account that was switched off. Open Settings, Apps, Contacts, Contacts Accounts. Open each account and make sure Contacts is turned on. Signing out of a work or Gmail account removes its contacts from the phone without deleting them.
- iCloud Contacts turned off. In Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, and check that Contacts is on under the apps using iCloud.
- Search by number. A contact saved without a name, or merged into another card, still turns up when you search for part of the phone number.
The Lists screen also tells you which account the missing contact belonged to, and that decides which method below applies.
Method 1: Restore iCloud contacts on iCloud.com
iCloud quietly archives your address book from time to time, and you can roll back to one of those versions. Apple only offers this on the website, and only from a computer or a tablet, not from the phone's browser.
- On a Mac, PC, or iPad, sign in at iCloud.com.
- Open the app launcher in the toolbar, or scroll to the bottom of the home page, and choose Data Recovery.
- Choose Restore Contacts. You see a list of archives with dates and times.
- Click Restore next to a version from before the contact was deleted, and confirm.
- Wait for it to finish before touching your contacts. Changes made during a restore are not saved.
Three things to know before you click:
- It replaces everything. The whole address book goes back to that date, on every device signed in to the account. Contacts you added after that date disappear.
- It can be reversed. iCloud archives the current version first, so you can restore that one again if the older version turns out worse.
- A fresh deletion may not be listed yet. Apple notes it can take up to 24 hours for an archive to appear. If the right date is not there, check again tomorrow rather than picking a much older one.
To keep the newer contacts too, export them first: in Contacts on iCloud.com, select all and choose Export vCard, restore the archive, then import the vCard again. Duplicates that result can be merged afterwards.
Method 2: Gmail, Outlook, and other accounts
If the Lists screen showed the contact under Gmail, Outlook, or Exchange, iCloud never had it. The account that did has its own safety net.
| Where the contact lived | Where to recover it | How long you have |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | iCloud.com, Data Recovery, Restore Contacts | As long as an archive from before the deletion is listed |
| Gmail | contacts.google.com, Trash, then Recover | 30 days |
| Outlook.com | People, Deleted folder, then Restore | A limited time, so act soon |
| Work Exchange account | Your IT department, or the Outlook Deleted Items folder | Set by the company |
| On My iPhone only | An iPhone backup made before the deletion | Until the backup is overwritten |
Google Contacts also has Undo changes in its settings menu, which rolls the whole Google address book back to any point in the last 30 days. It is the better choice when a bad merge or a sync damaged many contacts at once. Recovered contacts return to the iPhone by themselves the next time the account syncs.
Method 3: Another device that has not synced yet
A deletion travels through iCloud to every device, but only when that device is online. An iPad in a drawer or a Mac that has been asleep may still hold the contact. Before it connects, turn off its Wi-Fi, open Contacts, find the entry, and write the details down or share the card to yourself as a file. Then let it sync as normal.
Method 4: Restore an iPhone backup, the last resort
An iCloud Backup or a computer backup made before the deletion can bring a contact back, with two big limits. A restore replaces everything on the iPhone with the state from that day, so newer photos, messages, and app data are lost unless they sync from somewhere else. And when Contacts is turned on in iCloud, contacts are synced rather than stored in the backup, so the backup may not contain them at all. It is worth it only for contacts stored on the phone itself with no account behind them, and only when the contact matters more than everything since.
No backup at all? Find the number again
Most of the time you do not need the contact card, you need the number. It is usually still on the phone:
- Phone, Recents: calls stay in the list after the contact is deleted, shown as a bare number. Tap the info button to add it to a new contact.
- Messages: the conversation is still there, titled with the number or email address instead of the name.
- WhatsApp and other chat apps: the chat remains, and the profile shows the number.
- Mail: search for the person's name. Signatures often carry a phone number.
- The person's other contacts: a shared friend can send you the contact card from their phone in one tap.
Make sure it never happens again
Contacts take almost no space and cannot be replaced, so a backup costs nothing and saves a lot.
- Export a vCard now and then. In Contacts, tap Lists, touch and hold a list such as All iCloud, and tap Export. Save the file to Files. It can be imported on any phone.
- Back up before every cleanup. Most contacts are lost during a tidy-up: a bulk delete, a merge, a new account. Cleana's Contacts tab has Backups, which saves a copy of the address book on the iPhone before you change anything, next to Duplicates, Incomplete Contacts, and All Contacts.
- Merge instead of deleting. A merged card keeps every number from both entries; a deleted duplicate sometimes takes the only copy of a number with it.
Everything in Cleana runs on the device; your address book is never uploaded. The feature is described on the contact cleaner page. For safe cleanups, see how to delete duplicate contacts on iPhone and how to delete multiple contacts at once. If it is photos you lost rather than contacts, how to recover deleted photos on iPhone covers that side.
Quick answers
Can you recover deleted contacts on iPhone?
Usually, yes. Contacts stored in iCloud can be rolled back on iCloud.com under Data Recovery, Restore Contacts. Gmail contacts sit in Google Contacts' Trash for 30 days. Contacts stored only on the phone need a backup made before the deletion.
Is there a Recently Deleted folder for contacts on iPhone?
Not in the way Photos and Notes have one. The safety net for contacts is in the account: iCloud's Restore Contacts archives, the Trash in Google Contacts, or the Deleted folder in Outlook.
How do I restore contacts from iCloud?
On a computer or iPad, sign in to iCloud.com, open Data Recovery, choose Restore Contacts, and click Restore next to a date before the deletion. The restored address book syncs to every device on the account.
Will restoring contacts delete my new ones?
Yes. A restore replaces the whole address book with the archived version, so contacts added since then are removed. iCloud archives the current version first, and you can export a vCard beforehand and import it after the restore.
How do I recover a deleted contact without a backup?
Look for the number where it was used: Recents in the Phone app, the Messages thread, the WhatsApp chat, or an email signature. Then create the contact again. A device that has not synced since the deletion may also still have it.
Why did my contacts disappear on their own?
Most often an account was signed out or its Contacts switch was turned off, or the Lists screen is showing a single list. Check Settings, Apps, Contacts, Contacts Accounts, and tap All Contacts in Lists before restoring anything.
Can I restore contacts from iCloud on the iPhone itself?
The Restore Contacts page needs a computer or a tablet. On the phone you can still check the account switches and lists, which solve many cases without a restore.
