How to Find and Delete Similar Photos on iPhone (Keep the Best One)
Ten shots of the same sunset, eight of the same group photo, a burst of thirty of the dog jumping. Similar photos are not duplicates, so the Photos app never flags them, and they are the biggest single block of wasted space in most libraries. Similar photos vs duplicates: why it matters
A duplicate is the same image twice, perhaps at two sizes. A similar photo is a different image of the same moment: a second later, a slightly different angle, one person blinking. The Photos Duplicates album handles the first and ignores the second, and the second is far more common. In a typical library, exact duplicates are a few hundred files; near-duplicates are a few thousand. If you have already merged your duplicates and storage is still tight, this is why.
Where they come from: burst mode, "just one more" retakes, group photos taken by three people on one phone, Live Photos, and screenshots of the same screen. At 3 to 5 MB each, ten near-identical shots waste 30 to 45 MB. A few hundred such groups is 10 GB.
Method 1: Clean up bursts in Photos
Bursts are the one kind of similar photo iOS understands.
- Open Photos, go to Albums, scroll to Media Types, tap Bursts.
- Open a burst and tap Select.
- iOS marks the frames it thinks are best with a gray dot. Tap the ones you want to keep.
- Tap Done, then Keep Only Favorites. The rest go to Recently Deleted.
It works, one burst at a time. It does nothing for the retakes that were not shot as a burst, which is most of them.
Method 2: Find them by hand
Photos has no similar-photo view, but the Days layout groups shots by moment, which makes clusters visible. Open a day, look for rows of near-identical thumbnails, tap Select, drag your finger across the extras, delete. Realistic for a few hundred photos or for a specific event. Above a few thousand photos it is an afternoon, and you will stop before you finish.
Method 3: Let a similar photo finder do it

How the grouping works

How much space to expect
- 1,000 to 3,000 photos: 2 to 5 GB from similar photos
- 3,000 to 10,000 photos: 5 to 12 GB
- 10,000 and up: 15 to 25 GB
Combined with exact duplicates and video compression, a first full pass commonly recovers 20 to 35 GB. The number is real only after Recently Deleted is emptied: Photos, Albums, Utilities, Recently Deleted, Delete All.
Mistakes to avoid
- Deleting a sequence that was meant to be one. A series of a child walking, a set of frames that tell a story: skip those groups. The finder shows them, it does not force the choice.
- Trusting file size. The largest file is often the blurriest one, because blur compresses poorly. Judge by the image, which is what the quality score does.
- Skipping the full-size check on important groups. Wedding, birth, graduation: open the keeper at full size before confirming. Thirty seconds, no regrets.
- Forgetting Recently Deleted. The space does not return until it is emptied, and it also protects you for 30 days. Both facts matter.
- Doing it once and never again. Similar photos accumulate at the rate you take photos. A ten-minute monthly pass keeps it at zero.
Keep them from piling up
- Review a burst the same day, while you remember which frame you wanted.
- Take the "one more" shot, then delete the worse one before you put the phone away.
- Turn off Live Photos when you do not need motion; each one stores a short video alongside the still.
